Humans In Nursing

Many Nurses Have Served

Many nurses have served Australia in various armed conflicts. Here, six army nurses embark on a journey from Ettrick in Melbourne on 18 April 1940. They are (left to right) Nona Johnson, Beatrice Maude ‘Billie’ Kelly, Rosa Layton Waycott, Vivienne Ley, Susan ‘Susie’ Terris Finlayson and Enid Ivy Baker. Interestingly, this photo is part of a series of 184 photographs withheld from publication by the office of the Publicity Censor, Victoria, during World War II. Many of the photographs relate to embarkation of troops. Others depict the European theatre of war, withheld for reasons relating to promotion of enemy propaganda. NAA: A11666,
